Like many brides when they are dress shopping - we see a gown shown in a certain color but we want it in a different one.

We *know* it will be beautiful - but sometimes it is SO beautiful it is jaw dropping.

We loved the gown, but we really wanted to have Candy in ivory. So we took a deep breath and ordered it not knowing exactly how it would look!

Tulle New York Bridal now in store

The most exciting thing about being the first store to pick up a new bridal line?

Being the first store in the country to have it!!

Tulle New York Bridal is the creation of Lia McNairy and Antonio Gaul - the creative design team originally behind the Melissa Sweet label. When Melissa Sweet closed, these talented designers decided to go off on their own and design this charming line of wedding gowns perfect for the Connecticut bride.

We were fortunate enough to have our first three gowns hand delivered to the store today - just in time for all the holiday engagements. The gorgeous Lia McNairy and the charming Robert Taylor drove the gowns up to Connecticut because they knew how excited we were about these gowns. (And it was also a great excuse to run across the street for an always exceptional lunch at Le Farm!)

We cannot wait for our brides to peek at these stunning dresses. These are the gowns that were delivered today - soon to be joined by many others!

It's an early Christmas here at The PLumed Serpent! Our staff is happily unpacking, steaming, pressing and checking off all the amazing gowns that have just been delivered to our doorstep.

The UPS delivery guy must have felt like St Nick the way we carried on when the dresses arrived!

There is a consensus among all of us here - Beloved is our favorite!!

This gown is amazing.

It is made of embossed satin that is "printed" with roses as well as accented with hand formed rosettes.

Pfizer Commercial Shoot at The Plumed Serpent Bridal Salon

Lights, Camera, Action!!

Pfizer Pharmaceuticals took over The Plumed Serpent Bridal Salon on Monday using us as a set for a commercial they are filming for their "pneumococcal pneumonia" vaccine. (Say that five times fast!)

The story line of the commercial is that a mother and daughter are planning a wedding, the mom starts to fall ill during the fitting for her Mother of the Bride dress, and ends up missing the wedding because she develops pneumococcal pneumonia. (Such drama!!)

We should have expected the shoot was going to be a fairly big deal when this was a preliminary meeting in the store the week before the shoot.

I didn't get everyone in the shot - (apologies to all my photographer friends) - but there we no less than 10 people here checking out the lighting, angles, concepts, etc.

This was all pretty exciting for us - the location scout told us that he had been to all of the area bridal salons and ours was by far the nicest one they checked out. (Thank god they visited after we did the renovations!) So after the preliminary visit from the location scout there was quite a bit of back and forth between the scout, the director, and us trying to organize schedules, time frames and requirements. All very exciting!

6:30 am call time. Still dark at the hour. But what was awaiting us when we arrived?

Why yes thank you - I would like an egg white omelet and some fresh squeezed orange juice.

And who should they decide to hire as extras for the commercial? Alison & Lissa. Alison "role" was to carry a wedding gown through the store and Lissa would be fitting the mom in her dress. Both of us well experienced in both those roles!

I have no idea what most of these things they kept wheeling in were for - but they all looked very impressive.

These were only a few of the trucks - there were about five more trucks and three trailers in the parking lot of the Playhouse next door!

(We were both very disappointed that we were not considered "talent" as only the talent qualified for hair & make up - we had to make do ourselves. We'll put that in our contract next time!)

A different mom in this shot. They filmed the commercial in both English & Spanish.

And then it was all done by 1:00! And when they left - if was like the Cat in the Hat right before the mom gets home! SWOOSH!! All the equipment broken down and removed in about 45 minutes and the store left as perfect as it was when they arrived!!

It was such an interesting, fun and educational experience for us to see all that it takes for a commercial to be shot. Stay tuned and we'll make sure to let you know when the commercial airs!

As a friend of mine once said - "OMG - ODLR!"

It made me laugh out loud - but truer words were never spoken.

Many couture designers only show a full collection once a year and it is usually in Spring. During Fall Market the will usually have a mini-collection. Just a few new designs to fill in and round out the collection from the Spring.

The beauties lined up waiting to be shown to us!

We definitely have a love of two piece wedding gowns here at The Plumed Serpent. Here are a few 2-piece options from ODLR. (The skirt will be available full length in front as well!)

Market Recap II - Monique Lhuillier Runway Show and Appointment

Always one of the most exciting shows we go to is the Monique Lhuillier show and this year - as always - it did not disappoint!

Monique Lhuillier is such a trendsetter. Her classic gown "Scarlett" from a few seasons ago had a dramatic keyhole back.

Loved how she re-worked it onto this ethereal, feminine gown.

There were many high-low hems shown throughout all the designers. How do you feel about this look? Great for showing off a great pair of shoes.

Is this a look you would ever have on your wedding day?

Super sexy and modern slit.

After the runway show we have our appointment in the showroom. When we are in the showroom thee are generally only 2-3 stores present and it gives us an opportunity to see the gowns up close, take better pictures and review the collection.

A few favorites:

"Keepsake"

A classic and modern ballgown

Love this idea - it is a "reverse" jacket. It is coverup that is sheer & beaded. It closes in the back so that when it is on - it gives the look of the gown having illusion sleeves and neckline.

Great for religious services where you need coverage as well as it a great look to transition from ceremony to reception.

"Emotion"

Love the draping on the bodice & backside and how the straps are so interesting in front & back. We will probably figure out a way in alterations to make this gown strapless or make the straps adjustable to go from off the shoulder to strapless.

The fit on this gown is flawless - this will make any brides figure look amazing.

"Lillie"

I always love a short fun gown. This is just the right look and feel for an engagement party, rehersal dinner, or whimsical garden wedding.

"Beloved"

Perfect name for this gown. The fabric is an embossed satin - if you look closely you can see that pattern of roses "printed" into the gown that give it a very cool and unusual texture. The hand tufted skirt is classic Monique. The whole look is so luxurious and decadent.

This gown is part of Monique Lhuillier's Platinum Collection. We are fortunate enough to be among a select and exclusive group of stores that carry this line.

(These are the gowns we get really excited about - they are just a little "more" - more embellishment, more fashion forward, more dramatic, etc)

"Candy"

This is actually a gown from last season. We loved the gown, but at the time it was only offered in a blush pink color. They are now offering it in Ivory now so we are thrilled and can't wait to have it in the store!

Market Recap I - Elizabeth Fillmore

One of my favorite designers at The Plumed Serpent is Elizabeth Fillmore. I think it is because she is truly unique. There is no other designer out there who designs gowns quite like she does. They are modern, sexy, a little edgy and just plain fabulous all around.

This year, in addition to the beautiful gowns, were the MOST AMAZING chocolates I have ever had in my life. It turns out that the chocolate maker, Chocolat Moderne, is in the same building as Elizabeth Fillmore's offices and they supplied the sweets for our writing appointments. OMG - heaven!

Love this gown for a destination wedding

Such a sexy back!

Beautiful applique at the shoulders and back. It keeps a simple sheath from being boring. I always love interesting details like this.

We always tell our brides when they come in that if there is a detail on a gown that they do not love - just let us know and more often than not we can change or modify it.

Well - our designers do the same for us.

We loved the shape and style of this gown - but the flower detail under the bust was just a little too three dimensional for us.

We spoke with Elizabeth and she is going to redesign that detail so that it will be a little more simple and easier to wear. An exclusive design just for our salon!

LOVE our designers and love when they work with us to help make our brides happy!

We love lace - it is feminine, elegant and so bridal. This gown will be available in Ivory lace over an Ivory lining as well as Ivory lace over Nude lining. We'll be showing the gown in Ivory/Nude. It is such a soft color and really showcases the lace.

This is another dress that Elizabeth is customizing for us. We loved the lace on this dress but wanted something with a slightly different shape. So she is taking this lace and making us a custom gown, that will be exclusive to The Plumed Serpent. We cannot wait to see the final result of this gown

So these were some of our favorites from Elizabeth Fillmore that we will be welcoming into the store by the end of March 2012. (yes - just like all of our brides - we too have to wait for our gowns!)

The "New" Westport Inn

I was shocked, amazed, & beyond impressed when I walked into the Westport Inn this past Monday. I knew they were undergoing renovations - but I had no idea how extensive they were.

The results are amazing! It is stylish, charming, warm and welcoming.

I'm trying to find a reason I need to stay at a hotel less than 10 miles from my house just so I can experience the whole new Westport Inn.

If you are in the area Tuesday - please stop in for a tour of the new Inn.

We have styled and designed a "bridal suite" so newlyweds can get an idea of what their wedding night suite would look like there!

The Plumed Serpent is heading to Bridal Market! (Now, what exactly is that?)

If you are a bride to be or are just just follow the bridal blogs and websites, starting this weekend, you will see and hear of little more than "Bridal Market." (Or as noted on twitter #bridalmarket!)

But what exactly is Bridal Market? Essentially it is fashion week for the bridal world. I have four non-stop days of appointments. Every hour on the hour! And all over the city as well.

Many designers show their collections in their showrooms on 7th Avenue. Otherwise know as the Garment District or Fashion Center. But many, many designers are not based out of NYC so when they show their collections they often take over hotel suites.

Romona Keveza shows her collection at the St. Regis hotel on the East side. Swoon! What a location - and the suite she takes over is larger than many homes I have been in!

For the past few seasons Monique Lhuilier showed her collection at the London Hotel. Gordon Ramsey has a restaurant there and a few years back, while having lunch, we saw him there! And just like on tv he had a pencil behind his ear!

We also go to fashion shows. What a great way to experience a collection. There is quite a bit of pomp & circumstance, but a runway show is a great way to evoke the feeling of a collection. From the music played as the models go down the runway to how their hair and makeup is styled. You immediately get the "vibe" of the latest styles.

We generally have informal meetings with the designers and have they have models wearing the gowns so that we can have an up close and personal look at the gowns. We then choose our favorites!

If you ask any of my brides getting married this weekend I would say most of them don’t necessarily feel the same way!

It is a celebration.

It is a celebration of a decision that you made the day you were engaged! So don't let a little rain put a damper on your parade. Go out and get the brightest and best rain boots and umbrella you can and wear them with the biggest smile you have. Enjoy every moment of your day.

Kim Kardashian Wedding dress predictions

We have so many beautiful brides getting married today. But the one who is all over the news is not one of ours! We will fully admit to the very guilty pleasure of loving all the crazy (or should that be krazy?) Kardashian madness!!

A few of our designers have added their two cents to the eternal question - What will Kim wear?

Anne Barge's prediction

Anne predicts over the top romantic drama.

Anne Barge says of her strikingly elaborate design, complete with lace and flared skirt. "The lace was the romance and the drama was the silhouette and three-dimensional beading and embroidery." Kim would be right at home in the plunging V-neck and fitted mermaid style, both looks she's loved to wear on the red carpet.

Romona Keveza's Prediction

Since Kim's wedding will be filmed for a two-part special on E!, she will need a megawatt dress to really shine on screen. Designer Romona Keveza imagines an off-the-shoulder gown with a deep neckline as well as a body-conscious bodice and a sweeping embellished look. "I also envision her wearing a long, elegant veil as a dramatic touch for her walk down the aisle," Keveza says.

Well, whatever she chooses to wear, it is bound to be amazing and we're sure we are not the only ones who can't wait for the big reveal!!

Marie Antoinette Photshoot

Yesterday's photo shoot was so much fun.

First, the shoot took place at Mark Twain's Country Estate in Redding, CT. It is a private residence now, but there are nods to Mark Twain throughout. In fact, the room he died in is decorated with period furniture. (I meant to take a picture - oops!) But what an amazing house!

I was blown away by the styling of Wedding Coordinator & Event Planner Sandra Downie whose design elements and decor were breathtaking! (The final photos aren't done yet so I don't want to spoil the surprise - the finished product will be up soon!) And it is always so much fun to work with my friend the talented photographer Melanie Lust.

So for now, here are a few of my iPhone photos capturing some sneak peek of the photo shoot.

The entrance to the house

It has a long driveway (at least one if not two miles long) and leads up to a circular drive with an wonderful expanse of a front lawn!

This is the back yard. All I could think about were Great Gatsby parties and playing croquet!

(FYI - I play a mean game of croquet - no holds barred - when growing up the games were quite bloodthirsty!)

Before the shoot started - our beautiful model in Monique Lhuillier. She is wearing Tulip corset and Primrose skirt from Monique's Platinum collection.

Melanie at work - I think she was on the step ladder more than she was on the ground!

OK, this had nothing to do with the shoot or Mark Twain - but I just LOVED these bathroom sinks!!

It was a little bit a feat for the model to get out to this field in her gown - but we made it! And the shots are well worth the effort!

In 1999 Beth Blake launched Thread Bridesmaid for one very simple reason: She had nothing to wear to her sister’s wedding. After searching for chic bridesmaid dresses and coming up empty-handed, she decided to simply design the dresses herself. One wedding, seven bridesmaids dresses and hundreds of compliments later, Beth realized she wasn’t the only one looking for stylish bridesmaid dresses, and soon thereafter launched Thread.

Until this year, there was no where stylish brides in Connecticut could find these dresses. Having your bridesmaids travel to New York or Boston just doesn't always work out!

We've decided to help our brides and their bridesmaids with this problem. By the end of the summer The Plumed Serpent will have the Thread Bridesmaids collection in the salon!

We have carried this brilliant invention at TPSB for years. Without fail, every Thursday and Friday we have a rush of brides, moms, bridesmaids and even guests coming into the store to pick up a dozen of these for that weekend's wedding.

The Wedding Dress

Miss Catherine Middleton’s Wedding Dress has been designed by Sarah Burton at Alexander McQueen.

Miss Middleton chose British brand Alexander McQueen for the beauty of its craftsmanship and its respect for traditional workmanship and the technical construction of clothing. Miss Middleton wished for her dress to combine tradition and modernity with the artistic vision that characterises Alexander McQueen’s work. Miss Middleton worked closely with Sarah Burton in formulating the design of her dress.

The dress epitomises timeless British craftsmanship by drawing together talented and skilled workmanship from across the United Kingdom. The dress design pays tribute to the Arts and Crafts tradition, which advocated truth to materials and traditional craftsmanship using simple forms and often Romantic styles of decoration. Ms Burton’s design draws on this heritage, additionally giving the cut and the intricate embellishment a distinctive, contemporary and feminine character.

The design

The lace appliqué for the bodice and skirt was hand-made by the Royal School of Needlework, based at Hampton Court Palace. The lace design was hand-engineered (appliquéd) using the Carrickmacross lace-making technique, which originated in Ireland in the 1820s. Individual flowers have been hand-cut from lace and hand-engineered onto ivory silk tulle to create a unique and organic design, which incorporates the rose, thistle, daffodil and shamrock.

Hand-cut English lace and French Chantilly lace has been used throughout the bodice and skirt, and has been used for the underskirt trim. With laces coming from different sources, much care was taken to ensure that each flower was the same colour. The whole process was overseen and put together by hand by Ms Burton and her team.

The dress is made with ivory and white satin gazar. The skirt echoes an opening flower, with white satin gazar arches and pleats. The train measures two metres 70 centimetres. The ivory satin bodice, which is narrowed at the waist and padded at the hips, draws on the Victorian tradition of corsetry and is a hallmark of Alexander McQueen’s designs. The back is finished with 58 gazar and organza covered buttons fastened by Rouleau loops. The underskirt is made of silk tulle trimmed with Cluny lace.

The Fabrics

French Chantilly lace was combined with English Cluny lace to be hand-worked in the Irish Carrickmacross needlework tradition.

All other fabrics used in the creation of the dress were sourced from and supplied by British companies. The choice of fabrics followed extensive research by Sarah Burton and her team.

The Royal School of Needlework

The Royal School of Needlework (RSN), based at Hampton Court Palace, assisted the Alexander McQueen team in accurately cutting out the delicate motifs from the lace fabrics and positioning the lace motifs with precision into the new design. The lace motifs were pinned, ‘framed up’ and applied with stab stitching every two to three millimetres around each lace motif. The workers washed their hands every thirty minutes to keep the lace and threads pristine, and the needles were renewed every three hours, to keep them sharp and clean.

The RSN workers included existing staff, former staff, tutors, graduates and students, with the youngest aged 19.

The RSN’s work was used primarily for the train and skirt of the Bride’s dress, the bodice and sleeves, the Bride’s shoes and the Bride’s veil.

Veil and Jewelry

The veil is made of layers of soft, ivory silk tulle with a trim of hand-embroidered flowers, which was embroidered by the Royal School of Needlework. The veil is held in place by a Cartier ‘halo’ tiara, lent to Miss Middleton by The Queen. The ‘halo’ tiara was made by Cartier in 1936 and was purchased by The Duke of York (later King George VI) for his Duchess (later Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother) three weeks before he succeeded his brother as King. The tiara was presented to Princess Elizabeth (now The Queen) by her mother on the occasion of her 18th birthday.

The Bride’s earrings, by Robinson Pelham, are diamond-set stylised oak leaves with a pear shaped diamond set drop and a pavé set diamond acorn suspended in the centre. Inspiration for the design comes from the Middleton family’s new coat of arms, which includes acorns and oak leaves. The earrings were made to echo the tiara. The earrings were a personal gift to the Bride from her parents for her Wedding Day.

Robinson Pelham have also designed and made a pair of diamond earrings for Miss Philippa Middleton. These earrings are more floral in nature to compliment the headpiece worn by Miss Philippa Middleton during the Service.

A tourmaline and diamond pendant and matching earrings have been designed and made for Mrs. Carole Middleton. Two gold stick pins, one with a single gold acorn at the head and the other with an oak leaf, are also worn respectively by the Father of the Bride, Mr. Michael Middleton, and the Bride’s brother, Mr. James Middleton.

Wedding Shoes

The wedding shoes have made hand-made by the team at Alexander McQueen and are made of ivory duchesse satin with lace hand-embroidered by the Royal School of Needlework.

The Bride’s Bouquet

The bouquet is a shield-shaped wired bouquet of myrtle, lily-of-the-valley, sweet William and hyacinth. The bouquet was designed by Shane Connolly and draws on the traditions of flowers of significance for the Royal Family, the Middleton family and on the Language of Flowers.

The flowers’ meanings in the bouquet are:

Lily-of-the-valley – Return of happiness

Sweet William – Gallantry

Hyacinth – Constancy of love

Ivy: Fidelity; marriage; wedded love; friendship; affection

Myrtle: the emblem of marriage; love.

The bouquet contains stems from a myrtle planted at Osborne House, Isle of Wight, by Queen Victoria in 1845, and a sprig from a plant grown from the myrtle used in The Queen’s wedding bouquet of 1947.

The tradition of carrying myrtle begun after Queen Victoria was given a nosegay containing myrtle by Prince Albert’s grandmother during a visit to Gotha in Germany. In the same year, Queen Victoria and Prince Albert bought Osborne House as a family retreat, and a sprig from the posy was planted against the terrace walls, where it continues to thrive today.

The myrtle was first carried by Queen Victoria eldest daughter, Princess Victoria, when she married in 1858, and was used to signify the traditional innocence of a bride.

Miss Philippa Middleton’s Dress

Miss Philippa Middleton’s dress was designed and created by Sarah Burton at Alexander McQueen. It is of a heavy, ivory satin-based crepe, with a cowl front and with the same button detail and lace trims as the Bride’s dress.

The Young Bridesmaids’ Dresses

The young Bridesmaids’ dresses were designed by childrenswear designer Nicki Macfarlane to echo the Bride’s dress. The four dresses were hand-made by Ms Macfarlane and her daughter Charlotte Macfarlane at their homes in Wiltshire and Kent.

The Bridesmaids’ dresses have been created using the same fabrics as the Bride’s dress. The ballerina-length, full, box pleated skirt gives the dresses a sculptural quality, with the layering of ivory over white satin gazar adding depth of colour. They have all been hand-finished with delicate English Cluny lace, which is visible under the skirts, and four layers of net underskirt. The puff sleeves and neckline are trimmed with the same English lace as the Bride’s underskirt. The backs have been finished with the same button detail.

The sashes are made of pale gold, wild silk, which is tucked at the front and tied at the back in a sumptuous bow.

As a special memento, the Bridesmaid’s name and the date of the wedding have been hand-embroidered onto the lining of each dress.

Capes (These may or may not be worn dependent on the weather)

The waist-length capes, also created by Nicki Macfarlane, are made from ivory Yorkshire wool, edged in fine English lace and tied at the front in the same satin gazar as the dresses.

Shoes

The Bridesmaids’ shoes were designed and made by Devon-based Rainbow Club. The classic Mary Jane style shoes are made from satin and finished with a Swarovski crystal buckle. Devon-based Rainbow Club have been designing, making and colouring handmade wedding shoes since the mid-1980s.

Bridesmaids’ Flowers

The Bridesmaids’ flowers were designed and made by Shane Connolly. The ivy and lily-of-the-valley hair wreaths worn by the younger Bridesmaids were influenced by the Bride’s mother’s own headdress at her wedding in 1981. The bouquets held by the Bridesmaids replicate the flowers used in the Bride’s bouquet, and they incorporate lily-of-the-valley, sweet William and hyacinth.

Pages’ Uniforms

The Pages are wearing a uniform in the style of that worn by a Foot Guards officer at the time of the Regency (the 1820s). The uniform draws its insignia from the Irish Guards, whose Colonel is Prince William.

The tunic is Guards’ Red with gold piping, Irish shamrocks are on the collars and its buttons are arranged in fours, denoting the Irish – or Fourth – Regiment of Foot Guards. The buttons feature the Harp of Ireland surmounted by the Crown Imperial. The breeches are ivory and are worn with white stockings and black buckle shoes

The Pages will wear a gold and crimson sash (with tassel) around their waists. The sash is worn by officers in the Irish Guards when in the presence of a Member of the Royal Family.

The uniforms were designed in the Royal Household and were created by Kashket and Partners, who have also fitted Prince William’s uniform for his Wedding Day. The collars and cuffs were created by the Royal School of Needlework.

Angel Rivera Trunk Show

Last weekend we had a trunk show with gown designer Angel Rivera. It was really fun to have a new designer in the store and very interesting to see the response because his gowns are so different than what we usually carry. I’d sum up his collection as romantic and fashion forward, yet timeless and extremely diverse. It was so great to have the designer in the store to meet the brides and best of all; he made sketches for each girl of her dress! We spoke with Angel and this is what he had to say;

“It was a pleasure being at the Plumed Serpent! The brides were all so great and I had a wonderful time helping them find the dress of their dreams. I also really enjoyed working with the staff. They all are the sweetest and kindest women. If you haven’t come to the Plumed Serpent you’re missing out! Alison, Lisa, Rebecca, Jessica, and Lissa are a wonderful team and every bride is treated as if they are the only one in the store! I have to say if you haven’t made your appointment you definitely need to stop by! I had the honor of showing our new collection and I enjoyed every minute of it. It is such an honor for me to be part of a bride’s special day and help her find the gown she is going to love wearing on the day of her wedding.”

Bridal Market - What exactly is it?

Those of you who follow our blog, follow us on Facebook, or are just are around us hear us talk about "Bridal Market" twice a year. But what exactly is it. You know we go into NYC and that you get to see pictures of pretty, pretty dresses - what what the heck are we actually doing besides looking at dresses and hanging out with Martha Stewart?

Bridal Market is held each year in April and October. It allows wedding dress, accessory and evening wear designers to show buyers (us!) and editors their latest designs. This is when we decide what dresses we want to bring into the store for our clients to see. Depending on the designer - we may see up to 25 dresses in a collection. Of those 25 we will choose 4-7 dresses that we want to add to our collections in the store.

One of my favorite parts of bridal market is viewing the collections with different stores from around the country. Every store has it's own "personality" or aesthetic. A dress that I couldn't pay one of my clients to wear might be a best seller for another store! It is wonderful to be around other salons from around the country to brainstorm, get advice from and discuss the bridal business.

While wedding web sites and blogs (ours included) will feature the images from Bridal Market in a matter of hours following the shows, brides will not be able to purchase - or even see - the dresses and accessories from these collections until 2011!
